Before Understanding explores childhood encounters with ritual, grief, and emotional events that cannot yet be fully interpreted. The series presents children moving through ceremonial and collective spaces where meaning feels partially hidden, sensed more through atmosphere than explanation. Constructed through AI-assisted image-making and photographic post-production, the work draws on the visual language of staged photography, memory, and emotional recollection to examine how early experiences become fragmented inner narratives carried into adult life.

David Miller FRSA is a UK-born visual artist working between the UK and Finland. Using AI-assisted image-making, staged photographic language, and digital post-production, he creates narrative works exploring memory, identity, ritual, and emotional ambiguity. Drawing on a background in filmmaking and scriptwriting, his images blend cinematic composition with psychological atmosphere. His recent series examine disappearance, childhood perception, and the unstable border between recollection and invention.
