BREATHE is a self-portrait series made in the shadow of stage IV cancer. Drawing on my experience as a cinematographer, I explore the emotional and psychological terrain of illness, resilience, fear, isolation, beauty. Created since 2024 and ongoing, often while recovering from surgeries or during treatment, these images reflect moments of pain, anxiety, resistance and reflection. They are intimate, composed, and raw. An attempt to make visible what is often hidden. A way to say: This happened to me, I am still here. I still see. I still breathe.
Benjamin Battersby is a British photographer and former cinematographer with over 30 years of experience in visual storytelling. Now based in Argentina, he turned the camera on himself after a diagnosis of stage IV cancer, creating intimate self-portraits exploring illness, resilience, and survival. His work blends technical precision with raw vulnerability, and a newfound truth that comes from facing the abyss and pushing through.
