Helgoland, part of Germany, is a small island that lies approximately 70 kilometers off the mainland coast. It is home to one of the most accessible breeding colonies of Northern Gannets in Europe. Early June 2023 I spent ten days photographing the Northern Gannets on Helgoland. Especially the early morning and late afternoon were very rewarding. I took this picture one morning when the rising sun illuminated the red iron oxide containing sandstone cliffs in the background.
