Indigenous conservation in Northern Kenya

Grevy’s zebra are one of Africa’s most endangered mammals, with only 3000 left in the wild. Understanding the connection between Indigenous Peoples and the environment, the Grevy’s Zebra Trust empowers local communities to protect animals and ecosystems sustainably. Samburu people work as wildlife scouts, gathering data on zebras and their environment. Villages work to grow more grass and water sources for both domestic and wild animals. In an era where indigenous communities are often excluded from their lands, the Trust’s approach can serve as an example for biodiversity protection.
