The female figure in opera is often linked to a role left on the margins of a predominantly male society and characterized by very strong feelings. These are troubled heroines, who face suffering with courage and have to fight against a patriarchal model. They mirror the society that was and is. These women have to face inner and outer loneliness, in these images amplified by the large stage space in which they find themselves. The aesthetic is based on a coherent visualization of the overall structure, a symbolic cage from which to escape.
