Grandmother Yulia cries as she sits in her home just to see her home was destroyed by shelling in Kyiv on Friday, March 18, 2022, she was lucky as she went to the supermarket to shop for groceries when the Russian missile hits.

The missile struck the residential area in the Podilskyi district, Kyiv, killing one civilian and injuring dozens, and 200 people need to be evacuated, shockwave and explosions destroyed countless buildings within several hundred meters, including one school and one kindergarten.

Alex Chan Tsz Yuk is based in Hong Kong, Alex has been devoting himself to photojournalism since 2019, mainly covering the civil unrest in his home city as well as human rights, international issues and conflicts.

With bilingual proficiency in Cantonese and English and professional proficiency in Japanese and Mandarin, he has been working borderless with various news agencies, including TV Asahi (Japanese broadcasting corporation), The Kyiv Independent (Ukrainian publication), and other HK-based media such as SOPA Images, Ming Po Daily News, AppleDaily Hong Kong etc.

Awards Alex’s recent work in Ukraine was awarded the Gold in War/Press Category, the 2nd Place Winner in the Press Category of Paris Px3 2023, ‘Excellence Awards in International Picture Story, Spot News Category’ and was the finalist in ‘Daily Life Category’ in CPOY77. He won also the 1st in ‘Human Rights Press Awards, Photography Single’ and Merit in ‘Taiwan Press Photo Contest’ 2021 & 2023.

In 2023, Alex had his first solo exhibition collaborating with the European Union Office in Hong Kong and Macau. He also served as a committee member of The Hong Kong Press Photographer Association (HKPPA) during rough times.
