Verhoef’s work can be described as an assay of humankind's place in the natural world. When she places herself in desolate landscapes, a character arises that can find peace & solace but is never fully detached from modern society. Astrid tries to visualize a desire for synergy that is challenged by an urge to control. With a minimal visual language and an almost geometrical approach to composition, she aims to emphasize the contrast between the human presence and the natural. At the same time she wants to create a moment or a scene that can only exist because of the combination of the two.
