Balancing Act

These photographs depict the body in a state of ambiguity. Hanging on ropes, these figures engage in acts of athleticism, endurance and performance. Yet they are also in a precarious position, exposed, forced to move in unusual ways, and existing in a limited and challenging space that renders them as spectacle, suggestive of women’s restricted power in society. Swathed in bandages that seek to enclose form, the bodies spill out, exploding beyond their dressings and can’t be contained. They are enveloped by an industrial building; a toxic and outmoded structure, a symbol of patriarchal power.
