Hebron’s Tomb of the Patriarchs, as it is known to Israelis, or Ibrahimi Mosque, as it is known to Muslims, is tense. The structure contains both a synagogue & a mosque, separated by a bulletproof glass partition. The Israeli military screens those entering & leaving the compound. Most of Hebron is under the Palestinian Authority’s control, however, Israeli settlements are present, including ~800 settlers who live in the the city center. They're protected by a permanent detachment of Israeli soldiers. In 1994, an Israeli-American settler entered the building during Ramadan & killed 29 Palestinians.
