Human Palermo

Human Palermo is a long-term photographic project started in 2017, with which I want to tell about the relationship between Palermo (Sicily), my own city, and its inhabitants (Palermitans) and their faces. In all the faces I see the habit that the city has to suffering and endurance, marked as it is by the countless conquests and dominations suffered. Beneath the cynical and ironic mask, the most intimate aspect is hidden: the city is deeply melancholic and disenchanted, and its soul is timelessly impressed in the faces of the Palermitans, in a two-way relationship and indissoluble identity.

Andrea Guarneri was born in Palermo in 1968; doctor since 1992, he learned to use the camera before the razor, thanks to his father, his first teacher. In 2012 he won the 3rd prize at the National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest. Since 2017 he has been working on a long-term project, "Human Palermo", on the identity of Palermo, his hometown. Honorable Mention IPA 2020 with the reportage "Human Palermo", Silver Winner TIFA People/Lifestyle category 2020, and Gold Winner MIFA people/Lifestyle category 2021 with the same project.
