Coal Miners of West Virginia

These are from a series of photographs that I created when I traveled down to West Virginia to share the stories of coal miners, a brotherhood of men who have been going down into the mines there for the last two hundred years. Often following in their fathers and grandfather's footsteps, these miners do extremely dangerous work. With all of the environmental controversy surrounding coal as a fuel source these days, I wanted to make sure that the faces in the middle of the fight were not overlooked. They are husbands and fathers, brothers and sons and I felt that they deserved to be seen.

I love what I do.
