Lightning Strikes

Capturing a thunderbolt during daytime is particularly challenging as short exposure times
are required. Due to the unpredictability of the event, one has to rely on a bit of luck.
We were driving through the magnificent Zion National Park when this storm occurred. I
quickly jumped out of the car and set up the composition although I felt quite frightened
being so close to the action. This particular lightning is especially impressive due to
its circular shape. The black and white composition highlights the raw forces of nature
and nicely complements the unique texture of the sandstone.

Images are created as visions in the mind. Subject, composition, weather, light, camera, lenses, exposure settings, photographic or digital processing, papers & frames – all these factors influence the final product and they need to be creatively combined in order to realize that initial vision.

I seek to create compositions which are eye-catching at first and draw the viewer’s attention straight away. I strive to be in the right place at the right time to get the most suitable light conditions for each scene in the quest to accentuate the landscape’s true character.
