Tavy

East Madagascar

Below the colourful surface of an exotic place.
This series shows a personal feeling while being at remote areas of
east Madagascar, where villagers struggling to survive daily in and
around the protected primary forests were „Tavy“ illegal burning is
still going on.

Andasibe is known as point of departure to trips into the protected
forest area. I met some members of the „Assosiation des guide
d’Andasibe“, a local organisation of guides, earning a small
income, while guiding tourist through the forest. Women make
beautiful handicrafts from which they sell at the park entrance.
I photographed daily life of those villagers involved in small
projects of this Assosiation.

Malgasch culture it’s all about there ancestors, they do have
great importance, they are powerful and almost the one rocking
the boat. Custums like the „Tavy“ for agricultural production, are
deeply embedded in their culture.

Corruption, poverty and the lack of education are reasons why
they stick to the traditions of their ancestors, also the harm to the
nature is obvious.

One of the most amazing forests with a unic endemic biodiversity,
is in serious danger.
