Mount Ijen and its acid crater lake in eastern Java is the site of sulfur mining. Miners carry loads ranging from 70�100 kilograms in hand made baskets several kilometers from the crater down the mountain to a nearby sugar refinery. Most miners make this journey twice a day for approximatelly $15US per load. The miners often use insufficient protection while working around the volcano and are susceptible to numerous respiratory complaints
