Mount Ijen and its acid crater lake in eastern Java is the site of sulfur mining. Miners carry loads ranging from 70100 kilograms in hand made baskets several kilometers from the crater down the mountain to a nearby sugar refinery. Most miners make this journey twice a day for approximatelly $15US per load. The miners often use insufficient protection while working around the volcano and are susceptible to numerous respiratory complaints
