Haiti Earthquake

On 01/12/10 a 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti, the western hemisphere's poorest nation. Due to the earthquakes close proximity to the capital city, where many are housed in badly constructed buildings, the earthquake had far greater consequences then similar natural disasters in other nations.

Michaelâ??s longtime fascination with story telling and the human condition naturally transitioned him into photojournalism. Michael passion for photography lies in long-term documentary projects. Michael mission is to use his photography as a medium to open dialogue that can help ignite change. He feels that if his images can make you see and feel, just a fraction of what he does, then he's accomplished what he set out to do.
Michael is a firm believer that documentary photography is more about who you are a person, then who you are as a photographer and considers himself a visual humanitarian. Michael has a specific interest in environmentally themed social issues and splits his time between San Francisco and abroad where he is working on an ongoing project.
Michaelâ??s work was recognized in the 2009 PDN Photo Annual and was awarded the Marty Forscher Fellowship for Humanistic Photography from the Parsonâ??s School for Design in NYC. In both 2008 and 2009, Michaelâ??s portfolio was awarded College Photographer Of The Year from The White House News Photographers Association and he was named National Press Photographers Association College Photographer Of The Year in 2007. His project, â??Recycled Livesâ?? was the grand-prize winner of Documentary category in 2009 for the PDN.edu contest and received a Gold medal for International Picture Story from CPOY63 Missouri. His portfolio was twice recognized by SFBAPPA receiving the Luci S. Houston Memorial Award in 2008. Michael was the winner of the 4th Annual Canon 24 hour shoot-out contest in 2009. His work was awarded a silver medal from The International Photography Awards and The Hearst Foundations Journalism Awards Program. He has also received numerous top honors from CPOY Missouri and Associated College Press.
