In China, there are a group of special migrant workers, who come from the rural areas but work in the cities, seeking for rusty metals on the deserted building sites with detectors. No matter when a signal appears, they start to work, digging out the clay or bricks, breaking them, examining if it is mixed with metal, and this is what they live on.
By the middle of December, 2010, the ragpickers have been working on one of the building sites in the vicinity of coastal area in Qingdao (host of the 2008 Beijing Olympic sailing regatta) for over 2 months. On average, 100kg collections of rusty metals each day can make RMB 3,000 plus per month, which is prior to a normal office worker in Qingdao. The job is tough, however, when they go back to their hometowns, they can lead a better life, and this motivates them to work in the cities.
