BIOGRAPHY

By through-the-lens abstractions of reality, Karen Jordan produces water images to celebrate nature?s seemingly endless ability to create its own arresting art forms of elegance and beauty. Unmanipulated and uncropped, these images sometime appear painted, rather than photographed. Consistent with her aesthetic, each remains faithful to the image as it existed in the environment. Through this eight-year effort of investigating the artistic possibIlities of abstract form offered by the natural environment, KAREN has sought to expand the definition of realism in contemporary photography depicting the natural world.

KAREN grew up in West Virginia where she won her first photo competition when she was 8-years-old. She studied photography, and subsequently digital (computer) imaging, at the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington, D.C. She holds a degree from the University of Illinois and attended Columbia University?s graduate Program in the Arts, as well. Before committing to her passion for photography full-time, she worked at NBC-TV News in New York, was a press secretary to a congressman on Capitol Hill and handled shareholder relations for a major corporation in Washington, D.C.

Her work has been selected for a forthcoming book on the history of color photography from the autochrome to the digital age (Carlton Books, London). The study will cover every major technical and artistic development in color photography of the last 100 years. In the last two years she has been a two-award nominee in international color photography competition and an award winner in international black-and-white competition.

Her work is included in a number of important corporate and private collections in Washington, New York, Florida, Maryland, Virginia and California, particularly.
