I'm working on a book dedicated to the many wrongly convicted people. The subject of this series is L.O.: he was accused for a crime he didn't commit, was tortured for 12 hours until he signed a forged confession, sentenced to to death, spent 19 years in jail, then released. (The TV set is a "souvenir" from jail: the only TV's allowed are made all clear for security).
Nicola Majocchi spent his teenaged years hurtling down the snow-covered slopes of the Italian Alps as a member of Italyâ??s Junior Downhill Ski Team. By the time he was 19 years old, however, 15 broken bones and two knee surgeries had given him ample reason to trade in his skis for a Hasselblad.
In 1988, after graduating from the Brooks Institute with honors and a bachelorâ??s degree in photographic illustration, Majocchi headed to New York City, where he landed a job as an assistant to Irving Penn.
After five years of working with Penn on accounts such as Lâ??Oreal, Calvin Klein, Issey Miyake, Clinique and Vogue, Majocchi struck out on his own.
Before long, his signature photographic style â?? a postmodern mix of urban edginess, elegant juxtapositions, and a timeless romanticism that rises ineluctably out of his European past â?? had solidified his position as one of New Yorkâ??s most sought-after fashion and beauty photographers.
Today, this Manhattan-based photographer shoots for an impressive roster of fashion, beauty, and advertising clients ⎯ including, Nine West, Nike, Versace, Levis, Reebok, Neiman Marcus, Sony, Brooks Brothers, Cirque de Soleil and New York City Ballet.
He continues to create editorial images for a wide variety of European and American magazines as well ⎯ from the venerable Harperâ??s Bazaar, Vogue Gioiello, Madame, Condeâ??Nast Brides, Self, Shape, Cosmopolitan to edgier newcomers such as Surface, City, Ocean Drive, Gotham among others.
