In the earth's history, we have only been around for an insignificant amount of time. Our monuments and superfund sights will slowly disappear under tectonic plates and be melted away.
I don't photograph pristine landscapes; they don't exist. Climate change and air pollution have altered even the most remote locations.
While this is a landscape, it is shot vertically. I am interested in composition. This photo is divided into two areas with different tones and textures; the land creates a sharp, contrasting line between them and brings to focus the tiny white dots of the massive tanks.
Jane Waterbury is a San Francisco-based photographer known for intriguing, bleak photography. She documents the similarity between human impact on the landscape and nature's own work. Her years growing up in the monochromatic vistas of the Mojave Desert instilled in her an ability to recognize incremental change.
