Growing up in Eastern Washington, USA, this was a very familiar image. The railroad tracks - they lined the countrysides and were the lifeline for growth and building the communities. The train was called “The Empire Builder” and served most of the big and little towns plus all of the farming communities in our vast region. I shot this with a Holga plastic camera using B/W film. I printed it in the darkroom with an alternative process called Lith printing. Lith is responsible for the grainy effect and makes the image look very old. Marianne McCoy is an American fine art photographer who grew up in Spokane, WA. Her extensive photography career has spanned 34 years. McCoy’s education includes Cornish College of the Arts, University of Washington and The Photographic Center NW in Seattle, WA. She has exhibited nationally, internationally and has been published many times. Years of time in the darkroom has made her an esteemed Lith printer and she was gratified to round out her career teaching advanced classes in studio lighting, natural lighting, plastic cameras and Lith printing at The Photographic Center NW, Seattle, WA.
