Apatani woman

Apatani are a tribe living in northeastern India. In the valley where Apatani lived, women were considered very beautiful, were captured by members of the neighbouring tribe. To prevent this from happening, the village elders forced all women to insert wooden nasal plugs and have facial tattoos to make them less attractive to their captors. This ancient practice was maintained until the 1970’s, when it was stopped by missionaries. Today there are only few old women with these characteristics.
