The cattle market of Urgench takes place on the outskirts of this remote village in the northern region of Karakalpakstan in Uzbekistan after the celebration of the Uzbek New Year Navrùz.
From early hours in the morning breeders, farmers, butchers and traders weave negotiations, forge relationships and introduce young men to the true flavour of “the life on the fields”.
Cold air sculpts faces of men while the sun shapes features and gazes. The cattle paw, get nervous and bellow while exhibiting their grandeur to the multitude of eyes that observe them, evaluate them and negotiate their price.
