Melancholia is defined as a feeling of great sadness.
The images within the Melancholia series, show a white rose slowly being consumed in black paint, intended to be symbolistic of ‘Black Bile’. The Ancient Romans believed that if you were feeling depressed, or melancholic, it was down to an overload of black bile in your body.
But out of pain and sadness can come beauty. Put simply, the images are a reminder of the beauty we can find in the midst of the sadness and struggles we all sometimes go through in life.
