Metamorphosis

The photographed objects are withered parts of plants that usually appear lifeless. But by changing their shape, they have gained a whole new aesthetic and shine in the warm light like blazing flames. Energy seems to detach from the matter and go into space.

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus, who established the basic principle of the cosmos “Panta rhei” (“everything flows”), described “being” as not static but as eternal change. He created a sensitivity for the processuality of the world, in which components and form can change but “being” is nevertheless preserved.

Jan Prengel's photography practice includes elegant architectural photographs and haunting still lifes. He uses a minimalist style to convey the silent beauty of stark urban surroundings. Prengel also works with the various complex forms that nature consists of to create his graphic and colorful abstractions. Free from distracting elements the harmonious compositions capture the world in an expressive and surrealistic way.
Born in Ulm in 1992, Prengel studied photography at the Lazi Academy. His internationally featured and award-winning work has been exhibited in the US and in Germany.
