The Ties That Bind

Early in the pandemic, the London borough of Hackney, my home, had one of the highest mortality rates in the country. Pre-existing problems like cramped housing, hunger, digital poverty, and homelessness intensified.

I began to document the unfolding crisis and how the people living around me were rising to meet it. Against the backdrop of living rooms, mosques, bedrooms, and basements, voluntary groups sprang up to meet the growing need.

These images show some of the struggles faced by my local community, and the stories behind them reveal the way we have become each other's lifelines.
