Statement for "Silver Leaves of Searching for the Soul"
On walks in the midwest and Florida, shortly after my husband's death, I found these dried leaves-luscious, silver-colored and sculptural. Thinking about my childhood, in a Catholic grammar school, the nuns talked about caring for our soul. I spent time wondering where my soul was? What did it look like? Finally, I decided that is was under my heart, fist-sized and white. This series makes me think of the soul.
At this time in history with the Corona Virus, death is a constant possibility. Is the soul real in some metaphysical form?
Lopez's photography work concerns itself with the natural world and the problems that humans have contributed to global warming, contaminated water, polluted air, the dying off of species, etc.. Much of her work is landscape often composited. Other work includes birds, botanicals and natural history objects. Her work is in many collections and she has exhibited extensively in the US as well as numerous countries around the world with her award winning photos. She has been published and has completed an artist's residency at Ragdale in Lake Forest, IL.
