Lamar Valley, Yellowstone National Park: This younger brown bear male was already feeding upon a young bison carcass when I arrived at first light, but the story was yet to unfold. The bear smelled something in the air and became very alert. At first he started to cover the carcass with grass, then stood tall to intimidate the approaching bison family. The bull bison were quick to show they meant business, allowing each family member of the herd to have a moment with their little calf. The grizzly did not leave quickly, but the power of the images is seeing the bison family mourn their dead.
