Grockles

Grockles.
I have spent over ten years photographing the mixing pot between Devon and the outside world. My photography looks at the relationship not just between people and place, but of local and outsider.
Grockle is a slur used to describe those outsiders – this series uses that as a springboard to explore the realities of life on the south coast. It encompasses the wild abandon of an English summer and the reality of numbers on a page – revenue, crime rates and population increases.
It is, in other words, the story of modern England.

I have been making images for over thirty years but it wasn't until about four years ago after people started telling me I needed a website I made the decision to start swimstones.
After about twenty plus awards from honourable mentions, exhibitions to winning The British Life Photography Awards and being shortlisted two years running for The British Photographer Of The Year Awards I have been stunned by the response.
I am called swimstones after a swim I do out to sea to a small cove and swim back with a pebble that I put a number on just to remember how many times I have made the swim.
