Honorable Mention / 2019 / Portraiture / Self-Portrait

1863/1963

I started this project thinking of the year of my birth, to my name and being a woman. Pre-Raphaelitism found itself poised between nostalgia for the past and excitement about the future, showed in their paintings a return to nature with an accurate, almost photographic representation of reality. Their works focused on atmosphere, female beauty, death and an aesthetic vision of art among other things. So I choose some famous paints of woman done in 1863 or done by painter born in 1863 (100 year before the year of my birth) or made by Pre-Raphaelite' painters to be superimposed on my selfie.

My works belong to the world surrounding me and I use everyday experiences as a starting point. Often these are extrapolated fragments from my daily life that would go unnoticed in their original context, moments that exist to find poetic meaning in everyday life and through them I try to lead the observer to ask himself questions, into a world of ongoing equilibrium between what articulates the stream of daily events and what could be different. I try to establish a link between the reality and what is imagined by me through aesthetics and the neverending searching of beauty.
