SUNBEAMS CREATE OTHERWORLDLY ILLUMINATION IN NAVAJO CANYON

Run exclusively by local Navajo people, Upper Antelope Canyon is one of the world's landscape wonders, natural beauty so rare and exquisite that the Navajo consider it to be sacred as a cathedral. Created over eons by the Colorado River, the Canyon is still threatened by flash floods. Navajos call it "where water makes a picture of itself in the stone." Sunlight overhead forms distinct shafts of light that slice into the canyon, changing hour by hour. Located near Page, Arizona, in the Navajo Nation, the rare colors of Antelope draws photographers from all corners of the world.

I have always said that the late photographer Harold Feinstein was my greatest teacher: I took a class from him in NYC and building on his techniques, rolling our own Tri-X, pushing it to 800, and walking the streets shooting whatever attracted us for less than a penny a shot. I shot B&W for 10 years (1967-77). I studied Color Photography at You Mind's Eye, Falls Church, VA. Since retiring from teaching on the Navajo Nation in 2014, I created Tom Jones Photography website, now 35 galleries, and 17 different jurors have chosen 11 of my color and 9 B&W photographs for fine art photo shows.
