The Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the iconic monument
depicting the faces of four former US presidents: George
Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore
Roosevelt, represents significant stages in the history and
evolution of the United States. Situated in the Mid-West’s largely
unpopulated black mountains of South Dakota, means that few
Americans have visited the site and therefore it stands, at times, a
silent and isolated testament to the ideas of those progressive
presidents. With the current divisions in American politics and
culture as they are, it’s as if those fundamental principles,
established by these presidents, are being truly tested.
