The King Is Dead

"Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej died in October, 2016 as the
world's longest reigning Monarch, widely loved and revered by the
people of Thailand.
His apparent endorsement of a 2014 coup d'état against the
civilian government effectively allied the Monarchy with the
military.
Thai "Lèse majesté" laws dictate that It is illegal to express
negative sentiment toward the Monarchy- and the military has
often invoked its duty to enforce these laws as a justification for
it's intervention in politics.
Adulyadej's son, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, will succeed
him as King but is much less revered by the Thai people, creating
questions about the potency of the future Monarchy as a social
force."
