Stateless

Many descendants of haitian migrants who worked all their life for the Consejo Estatal del Azucar in the Dominican Republic -a state
organism in charge of the national sugar production- and never
came back to Haiti find themselves now without a nationality. Despite being born in the Dominican Republic and never been in another country, they are considered descendants from persons"in
transit". As a consequence, they do not have basic documents
such as passport or social security number. Those persons can´t
enjoy basic civil rights like full access to education, getting
married, opening a bank account or traveling abroad legally. They
become from the moment they are born prisoners of an invisible
cage in the precarious bateys (favelas existing in the sugar cane
plantations where workers live).
