Ukraine Front line - Civilians & Soldiers

Ukrainian soldiers felt a mixture of relief and distress as they withdrew from Debaltseve.
Kiev forces were not able to withdraw all their troops as pro-Russian separatists had
surrounded Ukrainian units.

This shell-shocked Ukrainian soldier made it back to the Artemivsk hospital after falling
back from Debaltseve. Suffering from a head concussion in a slow, softly spoken voice he
said:

“They fired rockets, artillery and mortars on us day & night for 6 weeks. They had
surrounded us, our ammunition was very low. We barely managed to escape. My unit was
overrun by tanks. Why am I here, I don't know...”
