Festive Fervour

Three generations of a Malaysian Chinese family having a joyful
reunion in their elaborately decorated home during Chinese New Year,
an important festival celebrated at the turn of the lunisolar calendar.

Symbolism is important for the highly superstitious Chinese
community, and most festive practices and traditions serve a purpose.
Everyone is dressed in red, as the bold colour represents
auspiciousness for the coming year. Adults also give out ‘red packets’
filled with money to children, which signifies the sharing of good luck
and wealth throughout the family.

All around them are hand-crafted, festive decorations creatively made
from discarded and surplus materials like plastic spoons, containers,
cardboard, textured paper and even banknotes. Most have touches of
gold, another symbol of good fortune.
