3.440 refugees have died in 2015 crossing Mediterranean. For this
work I chose Greece as is the largest single entry point for new
arrivals in Europe. I asked people to trust me and to follow me
underwater. If we were to give only one word to define life: the
breath. I asked my models to overcome their fears and anxieties
about suffocation - of not breathing. Just for a pose, their faces
would reveal what it feels like to be deprived of air, to lose life and
freedom. I was the only one who could provide my models with air.
I show how dependant we are on that breath. I sometimes saw the
fight for survival in their eyes but also the panic and distress
caused by the deprivation of what keeps us all alive. On land it is
us Europeans who can give back ‘’ the breath’’ to refugees.
