In 2014 students took to the streets of Admiralty to protest
against the Chinese electoral reform in Hong Kong. After early
clashes with police the protest became largely peaceful and
symbolic, characterised by the use of umbrellas. Initially used to
repel tear gas, the umbrellas became synonymous with the
subversion and camaraderie underpinning the movement.
