This work uses simple color and strong contrast to capture the
elegance and energy present in dance. Though only a still image
from an art of motion, I attempt to use dramatic light to arouse
feeling and emotion in the audience, showcasing these athletes'
accomplishments. Dance photography is a collaborative effort with
the dancers to create and communicate the physicality of form and
motion. It is their grace, beauty and elegance that creates
photographs with mood and expression.
Photography began as documentation of my travels and continued into an exploration of landscape and nature. With the opportunity to photograph some stage performances, I found that dance photography became my focus and an immensely rewarding experience. Dance can be described as an exploration of movement and expression over time. Photographing these moments is about creating a still photograph that illustrates a single moment and yet encompasses the before and after of the expression. These are the amazing experiences that I try to architect into a still photograph.
