The Oncoming Storm

On the evening of May 25, 2009, cyclone Aila made landfall in the Bay of Bengal and began
its destructive path northward. Three hundred kilometers north, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, I
found a small group of street children frolicking in the rain- seemly unaware, or
uncaring, of the devastation about to follow. One of them rested briefly against a tree
before disappearing into her stormy and uncertain life.
