Beyond the Looking Glass

  • Photographer
    Catherine Rondeau, Canada

Catherine Rondeau's photographic work explores an extraordinary realm: children’s imagination. In the wake of literary and psychological studies, her images portray children, much fairy tale characters who confront their fears and quench their most intimate desires. Tinged with poetry and expressive candour, the dreamlike trompe-l oeil compositions of the artist are invitations to dive into the swarming and colorful reverie of a child busy negotiating her place in the world.

Catherine Rondeau is a fine art photographer, videographer and author. Over the last few years, she has developed an acute interest for surrealism and now specializes in the creation of whimsical dreamlike photo montages that blur the boundaries between fiction and reality. Inspired by her research into the perception of wonderment in folk and fairy tales, she is currently working on a series of images that portray the way children daily use their imagination to go, much like Alice in Wonderland, beyond the looking glass in order to release inner tensions. Tinged with poetry and expressive candor, her dreamlike trompe l'oeil compositions are invitations to dive into the swarming and colorful reverie of a child busy negotiating her place in the world.
