Having been intrigued by social behaviors and habits amongst my family and friends,
I sought to better understand the impact of their environment and experiences on their
personalities. What started with a strong need to understand human characters, led to
a fascination with the falsity behind appearances.
After a recent separation between both my parents, I became more aware of the
tension and lack of communication between my family members. My mother began to
exhibit obsessive-compulsive behaviors. There was a sense of pretense in an ideal
image that she was trying desperately to upkeep. I realized how much we have grown
apart in the last few years.
I often take comfort in listening to the sounds made by people within a space. It
indicates a form of presence within a living space. Like characters on a stage, they
take their entrances; perform their daily routines and then exit.
Sarah Choo Jing (b. 1990, Singapore) is known for her interdisciplinary approach to photography, video and installation. Her work depicts identifiable moments and characters within contemporary urban society suggesting a plethora of private and often solitary narratives. The artist is concerned with the gaze of the flaneur, voyeurism and the uncanny.
Choo lives and works in Singapore.
