Survivor

Portrait of strength and beauty in the face of cancer. From a series about my daughter's successful battle with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

George Murphy has been creating images of the world for well over thirty years. It is a passion that has carried him up icy mountains, out to the launch pads of NASA?s Kennedy Space Center and onto the studio sets of many Hollywood motion pictures. His drive to create imagery of the highest caliber crosses the bounds between still photography and motion pictures, journalistic reality and digital fantasy.
Murphy's roots are in traditional editorial, corporate and commercial photography, including a stint as a stringer for the New York picture agency Black Star. But it was his early work on educational multi-media projects that drew him to the cutting edge digital imaging tools that were emerging in the early eighties and launched him into a career as a visual effects artist and supervisor for some of the most challenging motion pictures of the past two decades.

While Murphy's work in the motion picture and television industries have made him an expert on computer graphics and digital image manipulation, ironically, it has also made him value, more than ever, the journalistic integrity of his editorial photography. "As a photographer, there are few things in life that match the rush one gets from successfully making a powerful image of an elusive event or moment. For me, the thrill of capturing and revealing that very real thing that happened in front of my camera, is unique."

Murphy is currently pursuing, in conjunction with his feature film work, a ongoing series of editorial and fine-art photography projects. Updates on Murphy?s work can be found at www.georgemurphy.com.
