Abstractions of Fallen Leaves

A series of abstract photographs that explore the physical and spiritual grace of fallen and decaying leaves.

I create abstract, dream-like photographs out of the artifacts of nature, such as fallen leaves, rotting seeds, and peeling bark. I'm drawn to the obscure beauty that can be found within these humble and overlooked objects: the fallen, broken and decayed bits of nature that you normally just trod underfoot. Their organic complexity provides me with a rich palette of patterns and textures to work with. By showing these common objects from unexpected perspectives, I try to create abstract images that feel strange, mysterious, and yet vaguely familiar. As people's minds instinctive try to resolve them into recognizable subjects, the organic origins of the images nudge them in unexpected directions. In the beautiful decay of these dead things, people discover familiar characters and stories.

For most of my adult life, my art took a back seat to paying the bills. I had to channel my artistic energy into graphic design to pay for college, and from that discovered a career which culminated with my role as the original creative director for Yahoo!. But I grew tired of using my artistic skills only to help other people market their dreams, and decided to take a chance on my own. I quit my day job, and focused all my time and energy on my art.
