Hashima Gunkanjima

Hashima island, also know as Gunkanjima ("war ship" refering to its shape) is an island of the Nagasaki prefecture in Japan. It was used for soil exploitation, leading to a very dense urbanisation on the island itself, one of the highest density rate in the world (1 person for 1.5m²). In 1973 exploitation ended, and suddently the island went abandonned. What stroke me the most in wandering through this island today is that, contrary to most abandonned spaces we can find, this one is free of human traces dating after its abandon. No paintings, no sign of human destruction: only the passing of times that lead Hashima to be what it is now. Among thes ruins and pieces of former life spaces for men, women and children, I have been hit by silence. That is why I do not wish to detail any further nor add more explanation about this space, but let the pictures, by themselves, suggest if possible the spirit of such spaces.

Born in France in 1980, I have been interested in art photography for long.
My first works and exhibitions focus on abandoned places for their graphical and organic interest. More recently I tend to develop some more personal researches, with more conceptual and staging photographies.
