Blank Billboards

A billboard is an advertisement on steroids. Itâ??s a symbol of Americaâ??s insatiable appetite for consumption. And the energy thatâ??s expended to illuminate a blank billboard at night is a symbol of the waste and excess of our consumption-based economy.

A blank billboard is also a symbol of the economic crisis. Too many have too little to buy anything. Yet, some say we wonâ??t recover unless we increase our consumption.

Like all advertisements, a billboard tells us what we should buy. But read literally, a blank billboard conveys an anti-consumer message: donâ??t buy anything.
