A Legacy of Violence

Violence is endemic in South Africa. Since the dismantlement of the apartheid regime in 1994, violence has exploded, particularly in the townships outside the city centres. Here, members of a subdivision of the streetgang 'The Americans' smoke crack cocaine and display their arms in the township of Manenberg outside Cape Town. South Africa is hosting the 2010 Soccer World Cup, and there is an imminent fear of violence and crime in general in conjunction with the event.
