In the hollows

Steph Tout is a Melbourne-based photographic artist most recognised for her pinhole work panoramic landscape montages created with a biscuit tin.
From previous studies in History and Psychology, Steph has developed a deep interest in the way in which different individuals perceive and interpret the world around us. Her work is informed by an intense fascination with landscape, and with acts of experiencing and absorbing mental pictures of that landscape. In particular, Steph brings to her work the principles of Gestalt psychology, which is concerned with the minds ability to organise sensations into perceptions. She explores these themes using her homemade pinhole camera, the design of which includes 6 apertures whose exposures overlap on a strip of film, creating intricate in-tin montages that range from near-seamless to surreal.

She has exhibited these works at the Daylesford Foto Biennale, the Castlemaine State Festival, Parliament House in Canberra, the Ballarat International Foto Biennale, in various art awards and group shows, and more recently in New York.
