Fading Traditions

FADING TRADITIONS, THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - The United Arab Emirates gained its independence from Britain in 1971. In less than 40 years it has grown to become one of the most affluent nations in the world. Blessed with 97.8 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, the standard of living in the Emirates is one of the highest in the world. The UAE is a nation in transition. Over 25 per cent of the world?s construction cranes are in the Emirates, and its cities are in a perpetual state of incompleteness. But, in the rush to modernize the nation, the UAE?s heritage has been lost. Many Emiratis still dress in the traditional garb of their forefathers. However, these simple garments are now accessorized with designer watches and sunglasses. The UAE yet struggles to balance the old with the new.
