People of Kolkata

  • Photographer
    Peter Velter, South Africa

I walked around Kolkata for a few days in December 2008. The overcrowding, the pollution, the poverty and the chaos on the roads are overwhelming at first.
But then I met the people and I discovered their humanity. I was amazed by the deep respect they show for each other and life in general. Street dogs can sleep in the middle of a very busy street or pavement, because they know that nobody will hurt them. The title ?The usual suspects? is a joke of course. Coming from South Africa, it was refreshing to see no crime, and honest people.
The people of Kolkata are beautiful, inside and outside. They taught me humanity and I will be eternally grateful to them.

Photography makes me see the world rather than just look at it.
