NOWHERE TO GO
"Inside Darfur"

This photographic story is about the life inside the Darfur region of Sudan. Thousands of refugees living inside this ongoing high political conflict, are trying to survive and build a normal future. Surrounded with over 490.000 km2 of dessert it's one of the most difficult environments on earth. Shortage of water is one of the big problems of this region, and a basis for this conflict. The African tribes are mainly farmers using the water for agriculture, while the Arab tribes are mainly nomads using the water to feed their camels and cattle. The Arab nomads travel from central Africa trough the Darfur region along with the raining season to the north. When the raining season stops they travel back to the south and this is the beginning of the dry season. During this dry season the rivers dry out and the nomads send their camels into the lands of the farmers, destroying their harvest. With the involvement of the Khartoum government this once local conflict became a international crisis. This violence and cross border fighting with neighboring Chad have led to a humanitarian crisis, causing thousands more innocent Darfurians to flee their homes and lands, to become refugees in this enormous dessert. The African farmers who lost their agriculture lands in this conflict, now try to earn their money by fabricating bricks in self made ovens outside the big refugee camps. This conflict is one of the most complex in the world. Violence can erupt any time threatening the life of many more people. While travelling for weeks trough the different parts of Darfur,, I met many African and Arabic tribes living in these hard conditions. They are proud people who try to build their life far from most politics. This war is on resources and the geographic position and living condition doesn't help any peace process. These photographs portray everyday life inside Darfur and it's amazing strong people.
